Front: Joseph Kasavubu (1917-1969), president of the Republic of the Congo
(Democratic Republic of the Congo) 1960-1965
Kasavubu studied to be a Roman Catholic priest. Later while teaching school
and working for the Belgian Congo government, he became active in the
nationalist movement. In 1955 he became president of Abako, a cultural
association that evolved into a political organization under his leadership.
He became Congo's first president when it attained independence in 1960.

Congo Democratic Republic, located in south-central Africa, was known as Belgian
Congo 1908-1960. It attained independence as the Republic of the Congo in 1960, and
