Front: Dawda Kairaba Jawara (1924-), President of Gambia (1970-1994)
Trained as a veterinarian, Jawara became active in politics in the 1960s. He
served as prime minister 1962-1970. After the country abolished the monarchy
and became a republic in 1970, he was elected it's first president. Jawara was
overthrown by a coup in 1994.
