Back to Africa

Liberia, located on the southern side of the African bulge, was settled by freed American slaves in 1822. The various settlements united in 1839 to form the Commonwealth of Liberia. It was established as a republic in 1847 with a constitution modeled after that of the United States. For a more detailed country profile, see CIA World Factbook on Liberia.
