Mali, a landlocked country in the interior of western Africa, was a French colony known as Upper Senegal-Niger in 1904. The name was changed to French Sudan in 1920. Became part of the French Union in 1946, and became the Sudanese Republic with complete internal autonomy in 1958. Attained full independence in 1960 as the Republic of Mali. For a more detailed country profile, see CIA World Factbook on Mali.
