Front: Moilin Jean Ah-Chuen (1911-1991), businessman
Ah-Chuen was a well-known and respected member of the Mauritian business
community. His family came from Guangdong, China. In 1931 he opened the ABC
retail shop, which laid the foundation later for the ABC Group of Companies.
Ah-Chuen became the first Chinese member of the Legislative Council in 1949,
and served as Minister of Local Government. For his valuable social contribution,
he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.

Mauritius, located in the Indian Ocean east of Madagascar, was originally settled
by the Dutch. The Dutch abandoned the island in 1710, and France claimed the island
in 1715, named it Isle de France. Became a British colony in 1810, and attained
independence in 1968. Mauritius is a member of the British Commonwealth. For a more detailed
