Rhodesia, located in the east-central part of southern Africa, was originally known
as Southern Rhodesia. It joined with the British protectorates of Northern Rhodesia
and Nyasaland to form the federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland in 1953. When the
federation was dissolved in 1963, Northern Rhodesia and Nyasaland became independent
states of Zambia and Malawi respectively. Southern Rhodesia became Rhodesia. It
attained independence as the Republic of Zimbabwe in 1980. For a more detailed
country profile, see CIA World Factbook on Zimbabwe.
