Senegal, located on the bulge of west Africa, was a French colony. Became an autonomous member of the French Community in 1958. Merged with French Sudan to form the Mali Federation in 1959 which became independent in 1960. The federation was dissolved in the same year to become the independent Republic of Senegal and the Republic of Mali. Senegal is a member of the monetary union of West African States.
