Somalia was governed by various local warlords after the collapse of the central government in 1991. This note was issued by Ali Mahdi Mohammed, a warlord who controlled northern Mogadishu, to pay his troops who were battling another warlord, Mohammed Farah Aideed, over who got to collect the taxes on Somalia's banana exports. The note, although dated 1991, was issued much later.
