Zanzibar

Zanzibar, located in the Indian Ocean 22 miles off the eastern coast of Africa,
came under Portuguese control in 1503, was conquered by the Omani Arabs in
1698, became independent of Oman in 1860, and came under British control in 1890.
Granted self-government in 1961, and independence within the British
Commonwealth in 1963. Joined with Tanganyika to form the United Republic of
Tanganyika and Zanzibar in 1964, and changed the name to Tanzania later that year. For a more detailed
