Zimbabwe, located in the east-central part of southern Africa, was formerly Southern Rhodesia. It joined with Northern Rhodesia and Nyasaland in 1953 to form the federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. After the dissolution of the federation, Southern Rhodesia became Rhodesia which was renamed the Republic of Zimbabwe in 1980 after granted independence.
