Indonesia, located along the equator between the mainland of Southeast Asia and Australia, was a Dutch colony. The Japanese encouraged the Indonesian independence movement, which began between the two world wars, during their 3-year occupation in WWII. Indonesia proclaimed its independence on August 17, 1945, and was established on 1949, after four years of Dutch military efforts to reassert control.
