Keeling Cocos Islands, located in the Indian Ocean south of Indonesia, was
discovered by Captain Keeling of the East India Company in 1609, and had been a
British protectorate since 1857. The islands were successively administered from
Ceylon from 1878, the Straits Settlements from 1886, and the Crown Colony
of Singapore from 1903. However, the real administration was vested in the hands of
the Clunies-Ross family who established themselves in the islands in about 1827.
In 1955 the administration of the islands was transferred from the United Kingdom to
Australia. For a more detailed
country profile, see CIA World Factbook on Keeling Cocos Islands.
