Tuanku Abdul Rahman was trained as a barrister in London where he was
elected first President of the Kesatuan Melayu United Kingdom, one of the
earliest Malay nationalist groups. Subsequently, he served in the Malayan Civil
Service in various parts of British Malaya. He was later elected first
Yang di-Pertuan Agong of independent Malaya in 1957 for a five-year term, but
died in his sleep in 1960.
