Brunei, located on the northwest coast of the island of Borneo, became a British
protectorate in 1888 and a British Dependency in 1905. Internal affairs were
restored to the sultan in 1954 while the British remained responsible for defense
and foreign affairs. Became fully independent and a member of the British
