Cambodia, located in the Indo-Chinese Peninsula, was a French Protectorate in 1863,
part of the French Union of Indo-China in 1885, and constitutional monarchy within
the French Union 1949. Cambodia became a fully independent kingdom in 1954. Renamed
Khmer Republic in 1970, Democratic Kampuchea in 1975 and People's Republic of
Kampuchea in 1976. The name was later reverted back to Cambodia. For a more detailed
