French India consisted of five settlements in India that formerly constituted a territory of France: Pondicherry, Chandemagor, Karikal, Yanam and Mahe. Chandemagor became part of India in 1950. The rest joined India in 1954. For a more detailed country profile, see CIA World Factbook on India.
