Back to Europe

Danzig, situated at the mouth of Vistula River on the Baltic Sea, had either been controlled by the poles, the Teutonic Knights, the Prussians or existed as a free city in the past 1000 years. It was a free city from 1919-1939. Ceded to Poland in 1945. The city is now known as Gdansk. For a more detailed country profile, see CIA World Factbook on Poland.
