Pirosmani was a self-learned artist. He painted on a black oilcloth. His
paintings have a monumental character and are at the same time very intimate,
warm with sentiment.

Zakaria Paliashvili was founder of the Georgian school of national musical
composition. He later became the first Georgian rector of the Tbilisi State
Conservatoire.

Front: Akaki Tsereteli (1840-1915), Georgian poet
Tsereteli was born in western Georgia, son of Prince Rostom Tsereteli.
Tsereteli graduated from the Kutaisi Gymnasium in 1852 and the University of
Petersburg Faculty of Oriental Languages in 1863. Prince Tsereteli was a close
friend of Prince Ilia Chavchavadze, Georgian progressive intellectual youth
leader. The two of them led a generation of youth protested against
the Tsarist regime and campaigned for cultural revival and self-determination
of the Georgians.
Tsereteli wrote hundreds of patriotic, historical, lyrical and satiric
poems, also humoristic stories and autobiographic novel. He was actively
involved in many educational, journalistic and theatrical activities.
