Ferenc Rákóczi II, Prince of Transylvania, was born into one of the richest families in the Kingdom of Hungary. He is remembered as the leader of the Hungarian uprising against the Habsburgs in 1703-11.

Hungary, located in central Europe, was a kingdom found by the Magyars in the 9th century. After suffering repeated Turkish invasions and followed by Habsburg control, it regained independence in 1867 under the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Became a republic briefly in 1918, followed by communist rule in 1919 and then regained monarchy in 1920. Came under German occupation during WWII and Soviet occupation after WWII.
