Back: George Best (1946-2005), Northern Irish soccer superstar
Best was a Northern Irish soccer player, regarded by many as the greatest
player of all time. He is remembered for his halcyon days with Manchester
United. He played for United as a winger between 1963 and 1974, helping them
win First Division titles in 1965 and 1967, and the European Cup in 1968.
Noted for his deft ball control and fine sense of balance as well as
on-field theatrics, he was adored by fans. The excesses of his playboy
lifestyle contributed to the early end of his career with Manchester
United in 1974, with 178 goals in 466 games. He later played with lesser teams.
Increasingly hampered by alcoholism, he never equaled his decade in the
First Division. He died at the age of 59 due to multiple organ failure following
decades of alcohol abuse.
Only 1 million of these notes were issued by Ulster Bank. They were all sold
out within days. The notes proved to be such a hit that some were being auctioned
at eBay for more than 150 Pounds. The bank presented the first note to Best's
sister Barbara McNarry, and the last note to his father Dickie Best at a
special launch ceremony at Belfest.
