Front: Krisjanis Barons (1835-1923), father of Latvian folk songs

Barons is famous for his work as a folklorist. He systematized the Latvian folk songs and published them in six volumes including 217,996 folk songs between 1894 and 1915.

Latvia, located in east Europe, came under Russian domination 1795-1918. Gained independence 1918-1939. Annexed to the Soviet Union in 1940. Occupied by Germany 1941-44.
