Front: Lucian Blaga (1895-1961), Romanian poet, playwright and philosopher
Blaga was born in Lancram, Romania into a family of priests. He received a
degree in theology at Sibiu in 1917 and a PhD in Philosophy at the University of
Vienna in 1920. In his life time, he had been a magazine editor, a Romanian
diplomat and a college professor of cultural philosophy.

Romania, located in southeast Europe, was known as the Kingdom of Dacia around
200 B. C. It was a constitutional monarchy in 1881. Became a "People's Republic"
in 1947 and a "Socialist Republic" in 1965. A new republican government was
established in 1989. Romania joined the European Union in 2007, and its
