Front: Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832), Scottish novelist and poet

Scott started out as a lawyer after apprenticing in his father's law office. Later he was made sheriff-deputy of Selkirkshire. He began writing in 1796.

His first major poem, The Lay of the Last Minstrel, appeared in 1805 and was followed by Marmion (1808) and The Lady of the Lake (1810). His first novel, Waverley (1814), was an immediate success. Scott's first prose, Ivanhoe (1820), based on 12th century England, was well received by the public. Subsequently, he wrote many more historical novels.
