Front: King Gustaf VI Adolf (1882-1973), King of Sweden 1950-1973
Gustaf Adolf was born in Stockholm, eldest son of King Gustaf V. He
married Princess Margaret of Connaught, granddaughter of Queen Victoria of Great
Britain. Gustaf Adolf became king at the age of 67. The king was popular among
the Swedish people for his informal and modest nature, and his purposeful
avoidance of pomp. Gustaf Adolf was knowledgeable in a wide range of scientific
fields including architecture, archaeology and botany. He was admitted to the
British Academy for his work in botany in 1958. He participated in
archaeological expeditions in Greece and China. He founded the Swedish
Institute in Rome.

Sweden, located in northern Europe between Norway and Finland, was found in the
10th century as a Christian stronghold. After conquering Finland late in the
13th century, Sweden, together with Norway, came under the rule of Denmark
1397-1523, in an association known as the Union of Kalmar. Regained independence
in 1523, and became one of the great powers of Europe in the 17th century. A new
constitution in 1975 restricts the function of the king to a ceremonial role.
