Front: Saint John of Rila (876-946), Bulgarian monk
St. John of Rila took the monastic vows at the age of 25, and became devoted to
living in complete seclusion. He believed that monks should live in harmony and
should include manual labor among their spiritual works. He once refused to
receive Tsar Peter, co-ruler of Bulgaria, because he believed monks should have no
contact with the princes of the world. This only served to spread his fame and
more monks joined him, all living in small huts near Rila. He wrote a rule for
this community, which survived to this day.

Bulgaria, a Balkan country on the Black Sea in southeastern Europe, was conquered
by the Bulgars, an Asiatic tribe, in the 7th century. The Bulgarian kingdoms
continued to exist until the east bulgarian kingdom came under turkish rule in
1393, and the west kingdom in 1396. Bulgaria was made a principality under
Turkish suzerainty in 1878. Became a independent Bulgarian kingdom in 1908. A
People's Republic was established after WWII. A new republican government was
elected in 1991. For a more detailed
country profile, see CIA World Factbook on Bulgaria.
