Back to Hyperinflation Banknotes

Romania suffered a period of hyperinflation from 1996-2005. The highest denomination before 1996 was 10,000 Lei. By 2003 it was 1,000,000 Lei. In the 2005 currency reform, 1 Leu was exchanged for 10,000 old Lei. Romania joined the European Union in 2007, and its currency is now pegged to Euro.
