Lao

January 26, 2012 - The central bank of Laos will next month issue new 100,000-kip (12-dollar) banknotes to encourage people to use the national currency instead of US dollars and Thai baht. At present, many Lao prefer to use US dollars and Thai baht for expensive purchases because they are available in larger denominations. Currently the largest kip banknote is the 50,000-kip while the largest Thai banknote is 1,000 baht (32 dollars). See scans, courtesy of Claudio Marana, at Laos

Thailand

January 12, 2012 - The Bank of Thailand (BoT) will issue a new series of banknotes, its 16th series, next week after the current series has circulated in the market for more than 14 years. The new notes comprise five denominations - Bt20, Bt50, Bt100, Bt500 and Bt1,000. Their size and colour remain unchanged from the present notes.

First launches will be the Bt50 banknote on January 18, the date commemorating the glorious victory of King Naresuan the Great in traditional royal combat on elephant back in 1593. My blog
