Back to Middle East

Nagorno-Karabakh, an Armenian Christian enclave located inside Azerbaijan, had fought for self government 1992-94. A cease-fire was declared in May, 1994. At present, the Karabakh peace talks are deadlocked. Azerbaijan is adamantly opposed to any political arrangement that leaves Karabakh outside its jurisdiction. Armenia, meanwhile, will not accept a settlement that restores any level of Azerbaijani control over the enclave. For a more detailed country profile, see CIA World Factbook on Azerbaijan.
