Back to Middle East

Turkey, located partially in Europe and partially in Asia between the Black and the Mediterranean seas, was the heart of the Ottoman Empire. After its decline, Turkey was ruled by sultanate until 1923 when it formally became a republic. For a more detailed country profile, see CIA World Factbook on Turkey.
