the 1979 Islamic Revolution
Khomeini was born Ruhollah Mousavi in the town of Khomein about 180 miles
south of Tehran. He came from a well-known religious family that claimed to be
the descendent of Prophet Muhammad. In 1921 he began his formal religious
studies in an Islamic seminary in Arak and later in the holy city of Qom. After
graduation, He taught Islamic jurisprudence, philosophy and mysticism for many
years and wrote numerous books on the subjects. He became an Ayatollah in the
1920s.
In 1963 Khomeini publicly denounced the government of Shah Mohammad Reza
Pahlavi. He was first imprisoned and then exiled. He returned to Iran after the
Shah fled, and became the Supreme Leader of the new Islamic Republic.
