Iranian Azerbaijan, former province of northwestern Iran, was proclaimed an autonomous republic in December of 1945 after a Communist-led revolt broke out against the central government. It lasted until December of 1946 when troops from the Iranian central government reoccupied the territory. For a more detailed country profile, see CIA World Factbook on Iran.
