Juan Pablo Duarte, Sánchez and Ramón Matías Mella are considered the founding
fathers of the 1844 Dominican War of Independence. But the independence was
short lived. When Pedro Santana, the first president of the newly independent
nation, pushed for reverting Dominican Republic back to Spanish rule, Sánchez
defied the traitors of the republican cause. He was captured by Santana's forces
and executed in 1861.

Front: Altar de la Patria is the home to the national mausoleum for the
founding fathers: Juan Pablo Duarte, Francisco del Rosario Sanchez, and Ramon
Matias Mella. This National Shrine is located at the heart of la Zona Colonial
in Santo Domingo.
Back: Puerta del Conde is a symbol of Dominican Patriotism, This historic
gate is also the entrance to el Parque Independecia, officially known as Altar
de la Patria. This site was construction in 1655 and originally named Fort San
Genaro. It was designed to defend the city of Santo Domingo from invading
armies and relentless attacks by Caribbean pirates. This is the place where
Francisco del Rosario Sanchez raised the first Dominican flag, thereby
proclaiming Dominican independence on February 27, 1844.
