Grenada, located in the Caribbean Sea 90 miles north of Trinidad, was first discovered by Colombus in 1498. It changed hands many times between the French and
the British until 1783 when it became permanently British. Grenada was a member of
the Windward Islands federation 1833-1885, the West Indies federation 1958-1962. In
1967, Grenada obtained a grand autonomy "Statehood" which limited relations with
Great Britain to foreign affairs and defense. It became an independent republic
in 1974. For later currency issues see British Caribbean Territories (1950-1964) and
East Caribbean States (1965-present). For a more detailed
country profile, see CIA World Factbook on Grenada.
