Benito Juarez was largely self-educated. He became a lawyer, a judge, Minister of Justice, and served two terms as President of Mexico.

Front: José María Morelos (1765-1815), leader of Mexican revolution against Spain

Morelos was born in Valladolid which later renamed Morelia in his honor. He was ordained as a Roman Catholic priest at the age of 33. In 1810, he joined Miguel Hidalgo in the rebellion against Spanish rule. Morelos took over as the leader of the revolution after Hidalgo was captured and executed. Morelos was captured by Spanish forces and shot as a traitor in 1815.

José María Morelos is a national hero of Mexico. In addition to the city of Morelia, the state of Morelos was named after him.
