Front: Ruben Dario monument

Ruben Dario Monument celebrates the life and wisdom of the Nicaraguan national poet. Dario is recognized not only as a great poet, but for starting the Spanish literary tradition of modernism in poetry. The statue depicts the poet with his hand over his heart as angelic muses encircle him from both above and below. Two swans complete the picture, bookending the scene in their quiet majesty.

Back to North America

Nicaragua, situated in Central America between Honduras and Costa Rica, was colonized by Spain in 1524. Nicaragua achieved independence in 1821 when it was a province of the Audience of Guatemala and became part of the United Provinces of Central America 1823-1838. It separated from the federation in 1838, becoming a completely sovereign republic. For a more detailed country profile, see CIA World Factbook on Nicaragua.
