St. Kitts, located south of Puerto Rico, was first discovered by Colombus in 1493
and ceded to the British in 1783. St. Kitts was a member of the Leeward Islands
federation 1871-1956, the West Indies federation 1958-1962.
In 1967, St. Kitts obtained a grand autonomy "Statehood" which limited relations
with Great Britain to foreign affairs and defense. It became an independent
republic in 1984. For later currency issues see British Caribbean Territories
(1950-1964) and East Caribbean States (1965-present). For a more detailed
country profile, see CIA World Factbook on St. Kitts and Nevis.
