St. Lucia, located between St. Vincent and Martinique, was first discovered by
Colombus in 1502. It changed hands many times between the French and the British
until 1814 when it became permanently British. St. Lucia was a member of the
Windward Islands federation 1838-1885, the West Indies federation 1958-1962.
In 1967, St. Lucia obtained a grand autonomy "Statehood" which limited relations
with Great Britain to foreign affairs and defense. It became an independent
republic in 1979. For later currency issues see British Caribbean Territories
(1950-1964) and East Caribbean States (1965-present). For a more detailed
country profile, see CIA World Factbook on St. Lucia.
