St. Vincent, located in the Windward Islands of the West Indies west of Barbados
and south of St. Lucia, was discovered by Colombus in 1498 and left undisturbed
for more than a century. The British began colonization in early 18th century.
The island was taken by the French in 1779, but restored to the British in 1783.
For later currency issues see British Caribbean Territories (1950-1964) and
East Caribbean States (1965-present). For a more detailed
country profile, see CIA World Factbook on St. Vincent and Grenadines.
