In 1609, nine ships carrying people and provisions sailed from Plymouth, England to the British settlement in Jamestown, Virginia. The ships caught in a storm and the flag ship, the Sea Venture, with Admiral Sir George Somers onboard crashed on a reef at a desert island.

All the crew survived. They used the wreckage from the Sea Venture and indigenous cedar trees to build two new ships, the Patience and the Deliverance. The following year, 1610, the two ships sailed for Virginia. But some of the crew stayed behind to claim the island, which became Bermuda.
