Front: George V (1865-1936), King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and the Commonwealth Realms, Emperor of India 1910-1936

George V was born George Frederick Ernest Albert, second son of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. He was educated by private tutor. He joined the Royal Navy in 1891, the same year his elder brother died of pneumonia. So now he was second in line to the throne. In 1893 George married Princess Victoria Mary of Teck, his second cousin once removed. He became king at the death of his father King Edward VII in 1910.

George V changed the name of the British Royal House from the German-sounding House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to the House of Windsor, to appease British nationalist feelings. He also relinquished all German titles in 1917.
