Back: Charles Darwin (1809-1882), an English naturalist, established that all species of life have descended over time from common ancestry, and proposed the scientific theory that this branching pattern of evolution resulted from a process that he called natural selection. He published his theory with compelling evidence for evolution in his 1859 book On the Origin of Species.

The Galápagos Islands (official name: Archipiélago de Colón; other Spanish names: Islas de Colón or Islas Galápagos) are an archipelago of volcanic islands distributed around the equator in the Pacific Ocean, 972 km (525 nmi) west of continental Ecuador, of which they are a part. Wildlife is its most notable feature. For a more detailed island profile, see Wikipedia on Galapagos Islands.

Galápagos Islands banknotes are privately issued by the Antarctica Overseas Exchange Office for collectors. They are not legal tender. The purpose of issuing the banknotes is to raise funding for some of the research and humanitarian projects in the Antarctic region.
