Back to South America

Uruguay, situated on the Atlantic coast of South America between Argentina and
Brazil, was discovered by a Spaniard in 1516, but settled by the Portuguese in
1680. Spain and Portugal alternately controlled the country until 1830 when the
Republic of Uruguay was established. For a more detailed
country profile, see CIA World Factbook on Uruguay.
