Falkland Islands, located in the South Atlantic 500 miles northeast of Cape Horn,
were discovered by British navigator John Davis in 1592. The islands were named
for Viscount Falkland, treasurer of the British Navy, in 1690. Argentine military
forced invaded the islands, Argentines called Malvinas Islands, in 1982. These
occupation forces later surrendered to the British. For a more detailed
country profile, see CIA World Factbook on Falkland Islands.
